EXCELLENCE IN DEMOLITION AWARD - HAWAII CSU PROJECT

North American Dismantling Corp. receives the Excellence in Demolition Award from the National Demolition Association for our work on the Continuous Ship Unloader (CSU) at Kalaeloa Barber's Point Harbor in O'ahu, Hawaii. The CSU was a rail-mounted, hydraulic, counterbalancing ship unloader equipped with a bucket elevator to remove coal from ships' holds.

The project presented unique engineering challenges: six concrete counterweights weighing 80,000 lbs each were positioned 90 feet above ground with unusable original rigging points. NADC engineered and cored new rigging points while managing slurry containment near the water. The systematic demolition plan required removing weight from each side of the main pivot point while monitoring forces with dynamometers to maintain safe working loads.

INNOVATIVE PLANNING DRIVES COMPLEX POWER PLANT DISMANTLING IN HAWAI‘I

North American Dismantling Corp. completed the total demolition and site restoration of a 180 MW coal-fired power plant on O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. The project included the 29-acre main plant site, 1.6 miles of overland conveyor, below-grade concrete, harbor facilities, and a 593-ton continuous ship unloader.

The work was completed in three phases, beginning with demolition of the main plant and supporting facilities. Specialized high-reach equipment was shipped from the mainland, while elevated dust-control systems helped contain debris during the island’s persistent trade winds. The conveyor system was then dismantled through active power, refinery, and asphalt facilities, requiring carefully coordinated crane picks, roadway closures, and nighttime work.

The final phase involved the engineered disassembly of the 128-ft-tall continuous ship unloader at an active harbor. An 800-ton crane, tie-down cables, real-time load monitoring, and detailed sequencing maintained the balance of the counterweighted structure throughout removal. Close coordination with harbor operations allowed the work to proceed safely while minimizing disruptions to daily vessel traffic.

LANDMARK IMPLOSIONS COMPLETE DEMOLITION OF 1,700 MW POWER STATION

North American Dismantling Corp. completed the total demolition and removal of a former 1,700 MW coal-fired power station in the Northeast. The 176-acre site included approximately 15 structures, a three-unit power block, cooling towers, precipitators, coal-handling equipment, wastewater facilities, and several supporting buildings.

The project involved extensive asbestos and universal-waste removal, mechanical dismantling, and a series of carefully engineered implosions. Three stacks measuring up to 750 ft tall, two hyperbolic cooling towers standing 500 and 550 ft, and the three-unit boiler structure were successfully brought down through controlled demolition. Crews also dismantled a coal unloader positioned over a river and addressed structural challenges created by previous demolition activity.

Advanced 3D modeling allowed the team to simulate critical cuts, pulls, blasts, and structural drops before execution. This detailed planning helped identify potential risks, optimize sequencing, and support close coordination with local, state, and federal agencies throughout the project.

NADC LEADS THE NATION IN CERTIFIED DEMOLITION SUPERVISORS

North American Dismantling Corp. is proud to have more Certified Demolition Supervisors than any other demolition contractor in the nation. Thirteen NADC team members have successfully completed the Certified Demolition Supervisor exam, with additional employees currently working toward certification.

This achievement reflects NADC’s continued investment in employee training, leadership development, and jobsite safety. Each year ENR publishes rankings of the Top 600 Specialty Contractors by sales volume. NADC has continued to rank among the top 20 firms in the industry for several years.

Also notable in 2024, NADC celebrated its 40th Anniversary and a record-breaking year of successful projects across the country.

143-BAY AUTOMOTIVE STRIP-OUT COMPLETED AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

North American Dismantling Corp. completed a multiphase automotive strip-out project spanning 283,500 sq ft and 143 production bays. Work included the removal of assembly lines, conveyor systems, trenches, and high-bay areas while operating around live utilities, newly installed equipment, and active plant operations.

The project was completed across three carefully coordinated phases, including two condensed shutdown periods. During the final phase, an 80-person crew dismantled 64 bays, eight high-bay areas, two trenches, and conveyor systems serving three assembly lines in just five days. Materials were strategically removed through a single overhead exterior door while crews coordinated closely with other trades performing concrete placement and equipment installation.

The final shutdown phase was completed one shift ahead of schedule without property damage or first-aid incidents. Detailed coordination, around-the-clock execution, and strict safety controls allowed the work to proceed efficiently without disrupting critical plant systems.

SPECIALIZED DEMOLITION ADVANCES URANIUM MILL SITE REMEDIATION

North American Dismantling Corp. completed the selective demolition and processing of asbestos-containing and radiologically contaminated materials at a former uranium mill site in Moab, Utah. The work included demolition of the last remaining mill building, removal of concrete vaults and foundations, excavation of buried debris, asbestos abatement, and size reduction of contaminated equipment for off-site disposal.

All work was performed within controlled contamination areas near the Colorado River, requiring specialized training, protective equipment, continuous monitoring, and strict measures to prevent cross-contamination. Crews also excavated and abated buried autoclaves, processed heavy equipment from the site’s storage yard, and used water atomization to control airborne contaminants. The building and its below-grade structures were demolished in six days, and the overall project was completed two weeks ahead of schedule without any incidents.

PRECISION PLANNING POWERS SAFE DEMOLITION OF 384 MW GENERATING STATION

North American Dismantling Corp. completed the total demolition and removal of a 384 MW power plant in Martinsville, Indiana, including six generating units, three precipitators, three 280-ft-tall brick stacks, cooling towers, coal-handling systems, switchyard structures, and supporting infrastructure.

The stacks’ proximity to a roadway and high-voltage lines required a controlled mechanical demolition approach using custom-fabricated equipment suspended from a crane. High-reach machinery was also used to systematically dismantle the plant from the top down. Work extended well below grade and included sealing intake structures, filling underground discharge tunnels, removing a low-head dam across the White River, grouting underground piping, and coordinating specialized underwater work.

NADC completed more than 60,000 man-hours without a single incident or recordable injury. Including subcontractors, the project exceeded 140,000 incident-free man-hours.

Detail and Determination Safely Bring Down a Dozen Buildings in Las Vegas

Deconstruction of more than half a million square feet of commercial and entertainment space on Fremont Street in Las Vegas was accomplished by North American Dismantling Corp. as a subcontractor to Tre Builders. Demolition included various one- to three-story structures, a seven-story parking garage, and north and south office towers standing 15 and 14 stories respectively, making way for the first new casino resort constructed downtown in decades.

The abandoned interiors housed materials from refrigeration and kitchen equipment to carpeting and furnishings. The north tower, with its steel frame and staggered truss system, presented particular challenges. NADC built a 35-ft-high workbench from demolished materials for high-reach equipment access. Despite crowded streets and casino venues nearby, the Clark County Department of Air Quality visited daily and issued no warnings or citations. The project required 28,163 man-hours.

North American Dismantling Clears Denver's Arapahoe Power Plant

North American Dismantling Corp. completed the comprehensive demolition of Denver's Arapahoe Power Plant for Xcel Energy. This complex project involved the careful dismantling of aging power generation infrastructure while maintaining strict environmental controls. The site is now prepared for future development, demonstrating NADC's expertise in power plant demolition and environmental remediation.

Power Plant Gutted for College Recreation Center

North American Dismantling Corp. transformed a Beloit, Wisconsin power plant through selective demolition, enabling its conversion into a community recreation center. This adaptive reuse project required surgical precision to remove industrial equipment and hazardous materials while preserving the building's structural integrity for its new purpose.

The Challenge: Safely Dismantle an Old GM Foundry

North American Dismantling Corp. tackled the challenging task of dismantling a legacy General Motors foundry while maintaining safety standards and minimizing environmental impact. The demolition and environmental clearing of the General Motors Guide Site in Anderson, Indiana recorded 113,130 man-hours of work with no recordable accidents or lost time injuries - a testament to NADC's safety-first culture.

FROM MICHIGAN TO MAUI: INDUSTRIAL DEMOLITION WITH ENVIRONMENTAL CARE

North American Dismantling Corp. traveled more than 4,000 miles from its Michigan headquarters to complete the demolition and salvage of a former sugar mill in Paia, Hawai‘i. The project included removal of major processing structures, storage tanks, a smokestack, warehouse facilities, and the interior strip-out of an 11,000-sq-ft building.

Extensive environmental controls were required due to lead-based paint throughout much of the facility. Crews implemented a comprehensive lead-management plan, environmental monitoring, soil sampling, dust suppression, erosion controls, and strict housekeeping measures to protect workers, the surrounding community, and the environment. Materials were carefully separated for salvage, recycling, and proper disposal. To minimize disruption within the town, scrap metal was transported along designated plantation roads to the harbor for shipment off the island.

AROUND-THE-CLOCK DEMOLITION KEEPS STADIUM EXPANSION ON TRACK

North American Dismantling Corp. completed a fast-track selective demolition project at a major university football stadium in East Lansing, Michigan. The work included dismantling the original press box, removing structural concrete components, and preparing the existing stadium for construction of a new 10-story addition.

Crews worked through winter conditions in confined areas more than 60 ft above grade, with only a limited window between football seasons. Around-the-clock operations, careful sequencing, and close coordination allowed the work to progress safely without delaying the larger renovation. The project was completed ahead of schedule with zero injuries, helping ensure the stadium was ready for the 2005 football season.

LARGE-SCALE ABATEMENT AND DEMOLITION TRANSFORM ACTIVE FACILITY

North American Dismantling Corp. completed major asbestos abatement and the total and selective demolition of more than 800,000 sq ft of office, laboratory, and industrial space in Southwest Michigan. The work included the removal of a 15-story concrete building, an eight-story steel structure, a four-story boiler, a three-story commercial building, and portions of several structures that required carefully sequenced floor-by-floor demolition.

Several areas had to remain operational or be preserved, including retained building sections, basement structures, and an active boilerhouse. High-reach excavators, crane-and-ball demolition, manual dismantling, and sectional removal methods were used to complete the work while protecting adjacent facilities and critical infrastructure.

The project also included one of Michigan’s largest asbestos abatement efforts at the time, with more than 80 abatement personnel working on-site during peak operations. Demolition and abatement were completed safely and on schedule, with no OSHA or air-quality violations recorded during multiple inspections.

LARGE-SCALE MILL DISMANTLING CLEARS THE WAY FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY

North American Dismantling Corp. completed the environmental decommissioning and dismantling of a former paper pulp mill spanning more than 120 acres in Berlin, New Hampshire. The site included 85 structures totaling approximately 600,000 sq ft, including boiler houses, turbine buildings, bleach plants, co-generation facilities, repair shops, offices, and supporting infrastructure.

The project required extensive environmental remediation, including asbestos abatement, transformer removal, and the management of industrial waste. Three concrete smokestacks—two standing 320 ft tall and one reaching 260 ft—were safely brought down through controlled implosions.

More than $10 million in reusable equipment was recovered and marketed for resale. Following completion, the property was redeveloped as a biomass energy facility, supporting continued industrial use and new economic opportunities within the community.
