Demolition of MacKenzie Hall |
|

Project Details
In November of 1990, North American Dismantling Corporation was
awarded the demolition of MacKenzie Hall for Wayne State University.
After careful evaluation, it was decided by the North American Dismantling’s
management team, that conventional demolition techniques would not
be best suited for this project.
To minimize the exposure to the student population
and other surrounding facilities, the implosion of the building
was essential. Prior to 1991, because of several failed attempts
by other contractors, the City of Detroit was very apprehensive
in allowing the use of explosives as a means of demolition.
After many intensive meetings and correspondence with
the numerous administrative departments within the City, North American
Dismantling finally convinced the City that with the proper management,
preparation, guidance and supervision, the use of explosives in
special situations was the safest means of demolition. On February
19, 1991 North American Dismantling successfully imploded the 230,000
square foot, 10 story, steel and concrete structure without any
damage to the surrounding properties.
